Tell us what your Calamity Corners door is doing

For businesses in Calamity Corners we keep records. Which cylinders were pinned to which key, how many keys were cut, which doors carry a master, when the closers were last adjusted. That paperwork lands in your inbox after the visit so the next staff change or the next audit is a matter of reading a page rather than calling around.

How a visit goes

Moving house is a long list, and the locks are easy to forget until the first night. We suggest making them one of the first calls.

    On our way

The priority is a door that closes and locks tonight. We assess the frame, the strike and the lock, and secure whatever was forced so you can stop worrying about the opening.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 52 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In neighbourhoods of established homes, keys have often been copied many times over many owners. Rekeying every exterior door to one fresh key is the common first job, and it works on old cylinders just as well as on new ones.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census).Mixed housing brings mixed hardware ages as well as types. A locksmith may rebuild a mortise lock on a semi-detached house and then set up a keypad on a townhouse door across the road, and treats each with the care its owner expects.

Let's clear a few things up

My car was stolen with the garage remote and a house key inside. What now?

Treat it as two exposures. The house key is handled by rekeying every lock it fits. The remote is handled at the garage door opener: its memory is erased so every old remote stops working, and new remotes are programmed. If the car had your address on its paperwork, do both before anything else. A locksmith can rekey the doors and, on many openers, clear the remotes during the same visit or show you the learn button on the motor unit.

I just moved in. Should the new deadbolt be keyed to a new key?

It is a good moment for it. Nobody knows how many copies of a previous owner's key exist, so pinning the new bolt, and the rest of the exterior doors, to one fresh key retires all of them at once. Lock manufacturers list a move as one of the main reasons to rekey. You come away with a known number of keys, each tested in every door it is meant to open.

Is there anything different about steel or fibreglass doors?

The lock hardware is the same; the door construction changes the method. Steel and fibreglass doors have a wooden or composite block inside the lock stile, and existing bores are used wherever possible. Where a new deadbolt must be added, the locksmith drills with a jig and bits suited to the skin so the hole is clean and square, and fits an edge plate designed for that door. Insulated doors also move less with humidity, so alignment tends to hold well.

Fingerprint, fob, code or phone: which is worth having?

It depends on who uses the door. Codes suit everyone and need nothing in hand. Fobs or cards are a favourite for children and for anyone who finds small buttons difficult, since a tap does it. Fingerprint readers are convenient for a household of adults but can be fussy with cold, wet or gloved hands in winter, so pair them with a code. Phone control is for whoever wants alerts and remote checks. Most families end up using two of these.
