homes and businesses in Orchard Park

Rekeying keeps the lock you already own and changes which key opens it, which makes it the tidy answer to a lost key, a departed roommate or a staff change. Across Orchard Park we rekey single doors, whole houses and small commercial buildings, and cut the new keys on the spot.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 52 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Layers of paint build up on older doors and frames, and a lock that seemed to fail is sometimes a latch glued shut by the last coat. Part of the visit in an older area is freeing hardware, cleaning the edges and checking the door swings true.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census). In mixed neighbourhoods, a family may move from an apartment to a house or the other way around. A locksmith who knows both kinds of door can rekey the old place for the next occupant and set up the new one on the same visit.

The moving truck has left, half the boxes are inside, and the single key the previous owner handed over turns the knob but not the deadbolt. Someone locked it on the way out, and nobody has a key that fits it.

The call
The shop's lever handle goes down as usual, but the latch inside the mortise case never pulls back. Staff are waiting on the sidewalk with their coffees, the door is locked, and the handle is simply moving air.

The pharmacy stockroom, the server closet or the cash office is protected by the same ordinary cylinder as the staff washroom. One lost key on a lanyard would open all of them.

Read here if you want to stop wondering about old keys and thin hardware. We fit locks that resist the common attacks, set up keys that only you can have copied, and leave you a written record of what was installed and who holds what.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

You run a home office with client files and equipment, and your insurer has asked what kind of lock is on the door. The honest answer is the builder's knob lock and a light deadbolt from when the house was new.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Someone tried the back door while you were away. The jamb is splintered around the strike, the bolt is bent, and the knob turns with a grinding feel.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

The front door has a handsome lever and a keyed knob, and that is all. Nothing above it.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

There is a hole where the cylinder used to be. Somebody twisted it out of the deadbolt with a wrench, and now the empty bore looks straight through to the kitchen, with the bolt still stuck in the frame.

Let's clear a few things up

If my key is lost, will I leave with a working key?

Yes, one way or another. If you choose to rekey, the cylinder is set to a new combination and fresh keys are cut for it on the spot, usually two or three, and tested in each door they should open. If you prefer to keep the existing pinning, a new key can be cut to the lock's code or by decoding the cylinder. Either way you are not left relying on a key that is somewhere else.

Is a broken key a sign the whole lock is worn out?

Sometimes, and the visit answers it. A key that failed from its own fatigue in a clean, smooth cylinder says nothing against the lock. A key that broke because the pins were worn flat, the cap had loosened or the keyway was full of grit says the cylinder needs a service or a rekey. One that broke in a corroded, pitted plug is telling you the lock is due for replacement.

My key is worn. Would a new copy have prevented this?

Possibly, if the key was part of the cause. A worn or bent key lifts the pins short of the shear line, so the plug binds even in a healthy cylinder, and a copy made from that key repeats the wear. A key cut from the code or from a crisp original is the fix. If the lock was also gritty or the door had moved, the new key would have eased things without settling them, which is why the locksmith checks all three.

Do I need to replace my whole deadbolt or just the cylinder?

It depends on what you have. If the deadbolt is a good heavy unit that throws a full inch into a proper strike, a high security cylinder can replace the ordinary one and the rest stays. If the deadbolt is light, worn or throws a short bolt, a new graded deadbolt with a hardened bolt is the sensible base and the high security cylinder goes into that. The assessment tells you which, door by door.
