is your first impression

Customers in Middlesex Centre notice a storefront door that slams, drags or needs a shoulder. We service the closers, pivots and locks that keep a commercial entrance quiet and secure, fit cylinders that resist tampering, and set the hardware so the door greets people properly and locks tight after close. Calls from Birr, Duncrief, Ettrick, Ilderton, Ivan, Southgate, Telfer and Vanneck are covered too.

Rekeying is our favourite answer in Middlesex Centre because it keeps good hardware in service. The lock stays, the pins change, the old keys stop working and the new ones are cut on the spot. It suits a move, a lost key or a staff change, costs less than replacement, and leaves the door looking exactly as it did.

Shop rules

Locks for the house you actually live in.

  1. Told what to expect. Before starting we say how long the work usually takes, what noise or mess is involved and what the door will be like afterwards.
  2. Room to decline. If a suggestion does not suit you, decline it. We will do what you asked for, do it well and leave the rest as advice.
  3. A tidy handover. Keys counted into your hand, the area cleaned, the old parts dealt with and a plain summary of the work. Then we are gone.
  4. Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Call to discuss your business's keys.

A locksmith's week in Middlesex Centre is a mix of small fixes and bigger decisions. A cylinder rekeyed after a lost key, a deadbolt added to a door that never had one, a shop rekeyed after staff changes, a safe that finally opens. The pages below describe each service and how the visit usually goes.

If You just got the keys to a house you bought.

Then Rekey every exterior door to one new key.

The seller, their agent and any tradesperson who held a copy are now locked out, and you carry a single key. Lock Rekeying

If You are renting, and the landlord says the locks were never changed.

Then Ask the landlord to have the locks rekeyed.

Tenants generally need the owner's agreement, and most landlords are glad to do it when asked plainly.

If A tenant moved out and did not return every key.

Then Rekey before the next tenant arrives.

It keeps the same hardware and closes the gap before viewings start. Lock Rekeying

  • Single-detached houses make up about 91% of homes in Middlesex Centre (2021 Census).A detached house gives a locksmith room to work: full access to both sides of every door, hinges and frames included. Let's clear a few things up

We need to open for customers. How do you sequence the visit?

Entry comes first and repairs second. Once authority is confirmed the door is opened, staff go in and start their routine, and the locksmith turns to the cause: extracting a broken key, rekeying for a lost one, re-springing a deadlatch or lifting a dropped door. Anything that can wait for a quieter hour, such as rekeying interior doors, is offered as a return visit so the shop floor is not blocked while it trades.

Is a broken key a sign the whole lock is worn out?

Sometimes, and the visit answers it. A key that failed from its own fatigue in a clean, smooth cylinder says nothing against the lock. A key that broke because the pins were worn flat, the cap had loosened or the keyway was full of grit says the cylinder needs a service or a rekey. One that broke in a corroded, pitted plug is telling you the lock is due for replacement.

My key is worn. Would a new copy have prevented this?

Possibly, if the key was part of the cause. A worn or bent key lifts the pins short of the shear line, so the plug binds even in a healthy cylinder, and a copy made from that key repeats the wear. A key cut from the code or from a crisp original is the fix. If the lock was also gritty or the door had moved, the new key would have eased things without settling them, which is why the locksmith checks all three.

How long does servicing a mortise lock take?

A single entry lock that needs cleaning, springs and a strike adjustment is generally done in one visit of an hour or two. Filing a bit key adds bench time, and a set of interior latches is longer simply because there are more of them. A case that needs a part fabricated, or a replacement case that has to be ordered to size, may mean a second visit; the locksmith says so at the assessment.
