Every key we cut in Sherwood Forest is tested in the lock it belongs to before we leave. It sounds obvious, but a key that works on the bench and sticks in the door is a common complaint about lock work. We turn each one, from both sides where the door allows, and adjust the cut or the cylinder until every key slides in and turns cleanly.

How a visit goes
Moving house is a long list, and the locks are easy to forget until the first night. We suggest making them one of the first calls.

Step 1 of 5
Call and describe the door
Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

Step 2 of 5
On our way
The priority is a door that closes and locks tonight. We assess the frame, the strike and the lock, and secure whatever was forced so you can stop worrying about the opening.

2021 census: what it means at the door
Every square is one home in a hundred.
- 52 in 100 homes · older homes
- 49 in 100 homes · mixed housing
- About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Established homes often have non-standard bores and backsets from an earlier generation of hardware. A locksmith working in such an area carries adapter plates and cylinders in the older sizes, so an upgrade fits the existing door instead of forcing a new one.
- Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census).A mix of detached and attached housing means a mix of key habits: spare keys under pots at houses, fob-and-key combinations in buildings. A locksmith can improve both, with a proper key safe or keypad here and a tidy suite cylinder there.

Let's clear a few things up
We need to open for customers. How do you sequence the visit?
Entry comes first and repairs second. Once authority is confirmed the door is opened, staff go in and start their routine, and the locksmith turns to the cause: extracting a broken key, rekeying for a lost one, re-springing a deadlatch or lifting a dropped door. Anything that can wait for a quieter hour, such as rekeying interior doors, is offered as a return visit so the shop floor is not blocked while it trades.
Can I just have another key cut instead?
You can, and it solves being without a key. It leaves the lost one working, though, which is the half of the problem that keeps people awake. Rekeying takes about as much effort as a trip to a hardware store counter and ends with a new key in your hand and the old one retired. If the key was mislaid somewhere it will never be found and named nothing, a plain copy is a fair choice.
I just moved in. Should the new deadbolt be keyed to a new key?
It is a good moment for it. Nobody knows how many copies of a previous owner's key exist, so pinning the new bolt, and the rest of the exterior doors, to one fresh key retires all of them at once. Lock manufacturers list a move as one of the main reasons to rekey. You come away with a known number of keys, each tested in every door it is meant to open.
Is there anything different about steel or fibreglass doors?
The lock hardware is the same; the door construction changes the method. Steel and fibreglass doors have a wooden or composite block inside the lock stile, and existing bores are used wherever possible. Where a new deadbolt must be added, the locksmith drills with a jig and bits suited to the skin so the hole is clean and square, and fits an edge plate designed for that door. Insulated doors also move less with humidity, so alignment tends to hold well.
