Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

The keys fell out of a gym bag somewhere between the arena and the parking lot. The ring has a tag from the building with the unit number on it.

In plain words

A key ring rarely holds only house keys, so a same-visit rekey looks at everything that was on it. The mechanical house keys are handled by repinning the cylinders. A garage door remote is erased from the opener's memory and the remaining remotes are paired again. A building fob or access card is deactivated by the property manager, and the locksmith can help you make that call. A car key with a chip is a separate service through the automotive side of the trade, since the vehicle's immobiliser has to forget it. Sorting the ring item by item means nothing that opened your life last week still does.

The call
The lawyer's envelope held two keys for the new house. The previous owners mention a cleaner, a dog walker and a brother who checked on the place, and the builder's paperwork shows six were cut originally. Four are unaccounted for.

How the visit goes

Illustrative locksmith scene — Northcrest
  1. Scene 1

Reading each cylinder before it comes off the door

Every cylinder on the list gets a close look while it is still in the door. The keyway shape and the maker's stamp tell the locksmith which pin kit fits and whether the keys can be cut on the van. The feel of the plug with a working key, if one exists, says whether the pins and springs are healthy or tired. Corrosion on the face, a wobbly plug or a key that needs a jiggle points to a cylinder that will benefit from cleaning or replacing while it is out. A homeowner-rekeyable cylinder, recognisable by its small reset slot beside the keyway, calls for a different tool and gets noted.

  2. Scene 2

Cutting the new keys on site

Common keys are cut on the van rather than ordered in, though some restricted systems need the blank from an authorised distributor first. The first key is cut on a code machine, a crisp, original-depth key rather than a copy of a copy, and tried in the first repinned cylinder before another is touched, so any adjustment happens once. The rest are cut to the same code, deburred, and tested in turn. Keys cut this way run smoothly from the start and stay accurate through years of copying, because every later duplicate can be made from the code rather than from a worn blade.

  3. Scene 3

When to think about rekeying again

Rekeying is a repeatable act, and after this visit you know what triggers it. Moving into a new home, because previous occupants and their helpers may hold copies. A contractor or tenant leaving without handing a key back. A separation or a change of roommates. A ring lost with anything that names your address. Manufacturers list exactly these moments, and a household that treats them as routine stays in control of its doors for decades with the same hardware. The locks on the door today can be repinned many more times; only the small pins and the keys change each time.

In the van

  • Key tags and a key register
  • Cylinder retaining-clip and cap tools
  • Pin tweezers and shims
  • Top pins and cylinder springs
  • Plug follower set

What shapes the quoteCalamity Corners Locksmith Co.

Getting to each cylinder
Doors spread across a large lot, a suite up several flights behind a locked lobby, or a gated property with a padlock at the road add walking and waiting time that the quote allows for.
Master-keyed building cylinders
A condominium or apartment suite cylinder on a building master system is pinned so the master still works, which takes coordination with management and a little more time than a stand-alone house door.
Number of keys cut
New keys are cut on site and counted individually. Two for a couple or six for a household with teenagers and a sitter: name the number and the quote reflects it.

Let's clear a few things up

Can I just have another key cut instead?

You can, and it solves being without a key. It leaves the lost one working, though, which is the half of the problem that keeps people awake. Rekeying takes about as much effort as a trip to a hardware store counter and ends with a new key in your hand and the old one retired. If the key was mislaid somewhere it will never be found and named nothing, a plain copy is a fair choice.

Is rekeying the same as changing the locks?

They lead to the same result, a door that a different key opens, by different means. Changing the locks puts new hardware on the door. Rekeying keeps the deadbolt and handle you have and changes what is inside the cylinder, commonly the bottom pins on a conventional lock or a reset on a homeowner-rekeyable one, so a new key operates it and the old one turns nothing. For hardware in good condition, rekeying is the natural choice after a lost key because nothing about the door's look or fit changes.

Do I have to prove I live here before you rekey?

Yes, and it is a step that protects you. A rekey changes who can open the door, so the locksmith confirms the person asking has the standing to decide: photo identification matched to the address for an owner, a lease or bill for a tenant, management records for a superintendent or property manager. Say on the phone what you have so the visit starts smoothly.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 52 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Decades of seasons move a frame, and an older house often has a front door that locks easily in summer and fights in winter. Setting the strike with the seasons in mind, and choosing a lubricant that stays fluid in the cold, keeps it working year round.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census).Where housing types are mixed, the same lost-key call means different things. In a house, rekey every door on the property. In an apartment, rekey the suite door and check with management about the common entrance. The locksmith asks which it is first.
